Kenitra

An important cultural and natural potential

Located forty kilometers far to the north of Rabat, Kenitra, the economic capitale of the Gharb region, is considered today as one of the main Moroccan cities. The history of this city dates back to the Phoenician and then Roman times. Kenitra port on Sebou River is the first and only Moroccan fluvial port. Kenitra will also host Atlantic Free Zone, the largest export free zone on the African continent (345 ha).

History

Kenitra, a 20th-century city with its colonial architecture, is developing into one of the most important cities in the country. Located in the Gharb region, several sites have a rich history: Banasa, Thamusida, Rhira, Vospisciana, Al Basra and the Kasbas of Mehdiya and Kenitra.

Several historians link it closely to the Kasbah of Mehdya, built in the sixth century BC, by Hanoun. Thus, Kenitra has been occupied by Portugal in 1515 and Spain in 1614, before being released by the Alawite Sultan Moulay Ismaël in 1681 …
